Who is Michael A. Fowler?

Lifetime in Spartanburg

I was born in December 1961 in Bronx, NY, but my mother died when I was 10 months old. My father left after finding out my mother was pregnant, so my grandmother brought me to Spartanburg in 1962. We lived in public housing on the southside of Spartanburg and received assistance from the government. My grandmother died when I was 10, and I was then adopted by my aunt.

Immediately after graduating from Spartanburg High School in 1980. I enlisted in the US Army. I served for 10 years and received an Honorable Discharge. In the Army I learned discipline, loyalty and a deep love of service to my fellow citizens. After my discharge, I returned home to Spartanburg.

Cancer survivor

After losing my brother and aunt within two weeks of each other, I was told that I had a malignant tumor on my kidney. I chose not to have the traditional treatments that had failed my family members. Through my faith in God and healthy habits, I have remained alive and active.

Over the years I have operated several businesses in District 31 including: restaurants, Zaxx’s and the Baber Rhyne; a produce market; convenience store; and catering service. Some were more successful than others, but all of my businesses provided jobs for young people who couldn’t get employment elsewhere.
